As has been said in other discussions, everyone is supposed to love "jehovah" more than their own family. This tears a lot of people apart. God is supposed to come before parental instincts and natural humanity.

convinced 95% of all active jw's don't have a clue as to where 1914 originates
by goingthruthemotions inso talking with my wife last night...i was explaining to her about a conversation i had with a person at work about end times.
he has a strange belief that some scriptures in isaiah perdict something huge is going to happen in september of 2015. she then states that no one can predict the future only the father knows and he is in a cult.
lol on the inside.. i then stated "what about 1914 and the dubs perdiction and what it means today" she said no there was never any predictions.

OneEyedJoe and Focus, ouch! I have a headache now from trying to wrap my head around all that.
"Ding: JWs used to be able to explain 2520 years from 607 BCE in their sleep."
Yeah, I could have done that when I was a kid and I was programmed for that shit, but after I got some distance from it, I couldn't do it any more.

Kingdom Hall not a Safe Place for Children
by Jeannette inbesides having to sit through endless boring meetings during the evenings when they should be in bed getting their necessary rest for school the next day, they are falling asleep in the chairs with their little heads falling over.
then all their fun is taken away by such a strict religion and a desert god which makes them grow up with no self esteem whatsoever.
they tell them they're all sinners from the womb up and only a rod will remove it.

"Jeannette: ... they are falling asleep in the chairs with their little heads falling over."
I was always getting hit or painfully jabbed in the ribs with an elbow or a book whenever I fell asleep, which was probably every meeting.

Watchtower Tells Us "Employers Seek JWs Only" Yet Most JW Employers Avoid Hiring JWs, Why?
by BucketShopBill inhere's a thought: we're told over and over how employers sing the praises of their jw employees, sometimes with a vague quote about how 'if we could only hire jws, we would as they are so honest'.
however, while some jw employers themselves may hire jw employees (usually cheap entry level positions), most don't.
in fact, many jw's in general who have businesses have a rule not to do work with jws, even those in their congregation.

Someone in a nearby congregation (I think he was an elder) owned a book binding business, and he only employed jws. I heard it was a horrible environment to work in because everyone was looking over everyone elses shoulders all the time making sure they were all behaving like good little jws. It was a breeding ground for gossip and rumour. Someone I knew hurt herself at work (I think she dropped a heavy tool on her hand, or something similar) and everyone reported her to the boss for swearing. The boss in turn went to the elders in this girl's congregation.
All she said was "crap"!

JW.org shows that the society doesn't really want to talk to people who aren't witnesses
by Skinnedsheep ini find it fascinating to see how quickly the society has about faced on the use of the internet.
interestingly they still have not adopted two way communication channels such as facebook, twitter, instagram.
etc.. if you are lurking....why do you think that is?

I noticed a log in link on jw.org
Does that mean jws have access to stuff on the site that the public can't see?

"noonehome: Every JW made a dedication… we all did folks."
I was baptised when I was 16 years old, and I had never known anything but the org. I had parroted all the answers a good little jw kid is supposed to give. By the beginning of my teens, I had severe depression and anxiety, as well as post traumatic stress disorder, and was already suicidal. I am also vision impaired, which I mention because it's something that made it harder to learn anything about the real world while I was growing up. For example, I couldn't have just gone to the local library by myself and used one of their computers to do research on the net.
So, I wouldn't call my baptism a dedication. I was just doing what was expected of me. When My mental health at that time was still the same as at the start of my teens, and when I got baptised I was still planning to kill myself.
If the law had any relevance to jws, they would have to recognise that at that time, I would not have been legally able to sign a contract, and they seem to see baptism as a binding commitment.

New Article in JW.ORG "Should Christians Drink Tea?"
by EdenOne inshould christians drink tea?.
would you like a cup of tea?.
this seemingly innocent question has been asked countless times, and is regarded as a gesture of courtesy and hospitability in many parts of the world, in both eastern and western culture.

At home, I remember once having a boot thrown at my head, sometimes being hit with a bible or other publication because my mother was always sitting at the kitchen with a cup of tea doing study. Other times, for reasons I can't remember presently, I remember my mother threatening to go and get the biggest stick or tree branch she could find in the back yard to beat me with.
